Photo by @petekmuller. A young cattle herder from the #Dinka-Rek sub-tribe stands for a portrait in a remote corner of Warrap, #SouthSudan. Pastoralism has been a mainstay of many communities in central & northern South Sudan for generations. Cattle possession determines social status, individual social mobility & community standing across large swaths of the country. Without sufficient numbers of cattle, young men have difficulty gaining respect in their communities and are often unable to pay hefty dowries required to marry. The emphasis on cattle possession generates the phenomenon of cattle raiding, during which neighboring communities mount large scale, armed operations to steal cattle from one another. Such raids are often accompanied by devastating violence and become retaliatory. Over decades of civil war in the formerly united Sudan, pastoral conflicts were exploited by larger political forces and led to many communities becoming awash with weapons. This image was made an an extremely remote cattle camp near the last remaining water source in the area. With a local guide & driver, we drove over twenty hours from the nearest large town in order to reach this location. I made this portrait late at night using a small, battery-powered light. In such a remote area with absolutely no light pollution, the darkness was profound. The following morning, a small raiding party from a neighboring community attempted to steal cows from the outskirts of this camp. This man and dozens of others mounted an immediate armed response during which several people were killed and others were wounded. #cattle #conflict #pastoralism #pastoralist
