RIP VILMOS ZSIGMUND, legendary Master of Light behind The Deer Hunter... and yes, Jersey Girl. When I saw Close Encounters of the Third Kind as a kid, I never imagined I'd work with the man who won the Academy Award for shooting Devil's Tower. Jersey Girl looks far better than it has any right to - and that's because Vilmos pushed me to be more visual in my storytelling when all I wanted to do was talking head closeups. I really wasn't worthy enough to work with a guy who captured images for Spielberg and Altman. Vilmos was way out of my league. Huge bucket of win.
