Un policier afghan inspecte un bâtiment utilisé par les insurgés lors d'une attaque et d'un siège de 24 heures contre le consulat indien, à Mazar-i-Sharif, le 5 Janvier, 2016. Ce consulat indien, dans le nord de l’Afghanistan, a été attaqué le 3 janvier au soir. La présence indienne en Afghanistan a régulièrement été visée par des attaques des insurgés.  En juillet 2008, un spectaculaire attentat-suicide à la voiture piégée contre son ambassade à Kaboul avait ainsi fait 60 morts. Plus récemment, en août 2013, neuf civils, dont sept enfants, ont été tués dans un attentat contre le consulat indien de Jalalabad, dans l’est de l’Afghanistan.
