@melissafarlow | A cool, little bird-a one day old sage grouse for National Bird Day. Researchers in Idaho tagged the mother and found followed her through the brush finding her babies hours after they hatched. Sage grouse are the charismatic ambassadors for the Sagebrush Sea, a little known but critical western landscape that supports hundreds of wildlife species according to Defenders of Wildlife. Adults have a fascinating mating ritual where males fly in at dawn and strut and make a unique strange call to the females. The population numbered 2 million birds at one time, but today they are estimated between 200-400,000 in the American West. Although numbers are diminishing, last year the US Fish and Wildlife Service declared the species no longer in need of protection under the Endangered Species Act.
