With an often unhittable split-fingered fastball, he won or saved almost half of the team’s victories during his four seasons pitching in St. Louis. Led the NL in saves in 1981, 1982 and 1984. Finished in the top five in Cy Young Award voting and top 10 in MVP voting those three seasons, a rare feat for a reliever. Pitched more than one inning in two-thirds of his relief appearances and earned 15 saves when entering the game in the 7th inning. Closed Game 7 of the 1982 World Series with a strikeout.
