Trainers with their #greyhounds at the starting line of a race in Faridkot, in India’s Punjab State. The dogs are a big deal in this part of the state, about 20 miles from the border with Pakistan. The simple track of tractor-groomed dirt belies the investment represented by these animals, many of which are housed in air-conditioned kennels and fed buttermilk and chicken. One dog owner estimated the cost of a top greyhound — which come from Canada, Ireland, England and the United States — at half a million rupees, or $7,500. The race itself is simple: A man turns a crank, a dead rabbit scoots down the track on a wire and 2 dogs shoot out at a full gallop. @danielberehulak photographed a day at the races in Punjab while on #nytassignment last week.
