#OnThisDay in 1939 Matthias Sindelar passed away, aged 35. The centre-forward played for the celebrated Austria national team of the early 1930s known as the Wunderteam, which he captained at the 1934 FIFA World Cup. Known as "The Mozart of football" or 'Der Papierene' – 'the Paper-man' for his slight build, he was renowned as one of the finest pre-war footballers, known for his fantastic dribbling ability and creativity. His passing deprived a city in turmoil of one of its favourite sons and idols. Some 15,000 citizens accompanied Sindelar’s cortege to the main cemetery in Vienna, where an act of remembrance is still performed every year on the day of his death.
