Today marks the 30th anniversary of world-renowned artist Joseph Beuys' passing. In January 1978, I went on a journey to the Lower Rhine with Beuys. It led us back to his origins, to his roots near the city of Kleve and its surroundings, to many places of his childhood and youth. When we walked into his former elementary school classroom, he quietly slipped into the seat he had occupied as a child, removed his hat, and sat motionless for a few minutes.
