On particularly cold days, muskoxen conserve energy by resting. It is then possible to approach them, but if you do not wait until they get used to your presence, there is a real risk of being trampled. The day I made this photograph I followed the herd for five-six hours before they all laid down for a long rest. I was freezing in my ski boots 10 minutes after I left my tent in the morning, so by the afternoon I just felt miserable. However, the scene of the snow-covered herd made me forget about all the pain and gave me some of the most memorable moments of my life. Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella National Park, Norway.
