"There's a lot to say, but the short of it is that we were not able to gain permission from the Burmese government to access the lower canyon of the Maykha. The rebel Kachin Independence Army has a strong presence in the area, and our safety was not guaranteed. Without permission, capture with unknown repercussions was basically guaranteed so there was little choice but to hike back out from Pangnamdim, however painful that was to swallow. The big question to me is would we still have tried had we known the situation more beforehand? Regardless of the answer, we're here moving forward and downstream, back to the river and plan B soon."
