Portrait of London-based photographer (+thandiekay contributor!) @lilybw Lily Bertrand-Webb An excerpt from an interview for @_highcontent . "A few years ago, I was going through old family photos and I noticed there was a box full of cropped, out of focus, thumb in frame, low angle photos as if a child was taking them… I later worked out that I must have taken them-maybe I sneakily picked up the camera and pressed the button. I’m hoping to publish them some point in the future, maybe a little book or something. I shoot on both 35mm & medium format, but the last few years, I have been using Mamiya 645 for my portraits, with only 15 shots per roll, I spend more time and thought in taking the photo. Mary Jane Gotidoc: 'You’ve said you go by Henri Cartier-Bresson’s rule: ‘A portrait is like a courtesy visit of fifteen or twenty minutes”. How do you capture someone in such a short space of time?' Lily: I warm up with the sitter, take a few practice shots to get in the mood then before we know it the portrait session is over. Nothing beats knowing when I got that ‘perfect’ shot! M.J.G: 'You’ve mentioned you are deaf, do you think this gave you a different perspective on vision and how you sensed the world?' Lily: I lost my hearing when I was two years old and got a Cochlear Implant when I was 10 years old. I can hear around 91% with it on. It defiantly has shaped how I am and perhaps my perception of the world. I used to think that I used photography as a means to communicate with the world, now I think I take portraits as a perfect opportunity to meet new faces and portray their unique personalities in the only way I know best; what I see."
