Blurry party pics, beach sunsets snapped on vacation, friends with glitter-smeared cheeks and mint-streaked hair mid-hug — Eli Mendel (@elimendel) captures the essence of teenage life, with one glaring exception. “I understand selfies. I understand the reason they do it, but I don’t feel like, in terms of photographs, they’re that good,” says the 17-year-old student living in London. “Except for making you look very pretty.” Eli can’t help his discerning eye — he grew up the son of Gideon Mendel, a photojournalist and activist, and the cousin of Mikael Subotzky, a photographer and filmmaker. His passion follows his parents’ sociopolitical activism; Eli plans on studying politics and history when he goes to university. But for now, he’s content to document the life and times of a normal kid. “I want someone looking at my photos to get a sense of what it’s like living as a 17-year-old teenager in London, the good and the bad,” Eli says.
