#OnThisDay in 1992, Roberto Carlos made his first appearance for Brazil in a 3-0 win over the United States in a friendly. He went on to play for them a total of 125 times to take second place on Brazil's list of most-capped players. Considered one of the best left backs in history, Roberto Carlos played in three FIFA World Cups, helping the team reach the final in 1998 in France, and win the 2002 tournament in Korea/Japan. At club level he joined Real Madrid in 1996 where he spent eleven hugely successful seasons. In August 2012, he announced his retirement from football at the age of 39.
