#psny_quizzical ?Succulents, often called “fat plants” derive their name from the Latin, Sucus meaning juice. The broad definition for succulent is: A plant with thick, fleshy leaves and/or stems that are able to retain water. This water retention trait enables the plant to prosper in dry climates and in poor soil conditions or with no soil at all.  All cacti are succulents,  but not all succulents are cacti. A succulent is a plant that has spongy roots and leaves. A prickly cactus stops birds and animals trying to eat them for their water (how smart ?). Most plants get rid of litres of water every day, by a process called transpiration, giving out water through their leaves (a bit like when we sweat!?). Cactus leaves have become a lot smaller so they don't lose so much water; most have shrunk to spines or hairs but some have disappeared altogether! The spines or thorns on many cacti are poisonous. Getting poked by them can make you feel dizzy, cause you to loose feeling where you were poked or even make you sick. Many kinds of cacti are edible. The juice and pads of the prickly pear (minus the spines, of course) is a favorite food for people living in Mexico and other countries in Central and South America. The juice and pads of a prickly pear are low in calories and high in fiber and vitamins. They fill you up without making you gain weight. The juice is full of vitamin C— just like oranges. ??
