This is 20-year old Rohingya migrant Muhammad Solim. He suffers from malnutrition, a direct result of three months at sea and 90 days in a jungle camp before he was ransomed for the equivalent of US $2,240. Forced labor generates a whopping $150 billion in illegal profits yearly but a bill signed by President Obama last week could change that. The Trade Facilitation and Trade Enforcement Act closes the loophole in the Tariff Act of 1930 allowing goods produced from slaves to enter the U.S. if American production could not meet consumer demand. The bill bans U.S. imports of goods made by convict, forced or indentured labor, a move that may have a profound impact on U.S. companies using foreign suppliers.
