A crack formed in the ice on the frozen lagoon that provides the residents of Shishmaref, Alaska — a community of some 600 people situated on a narrow barrier island — with access to the mainland. According to a recent study, Alaska’s glaciers lost some 75 gigatons of ice every year between 1994 and 2013. In Shishmaref, frozen ice forms natural barriers that protect the shores from powerful storm surges. As the coastline erodes, rising tides pose a real threat to the Inupiat village. “We hear about climate change … and it’s all very remote and nebulous,” said @nimataradjiphoto, who traveled to Shishmaref last December.
