“I tend to think of the act of photographing, generally speaking, as an adventure. My favorite thing is to go where I’ve never been.” Happy birthday Diane Arbus! This photograph of a female bartender is composed like a formal portrait. Elegantly sat in her chair the lady is not stiff, but clearly posing. The traditional aesthetic of the photograph is subverted and conceptualised by the ‘souvenir’ of a poodle placed on the opposite side of the frame.
