“Towards the end of my pregnancy, they told me my son had a problem in his head, a calcification. Then, when he was born I learned he had microcephaly,” says Alice,15, holding her a 4-month old baby in Recife, #Brazil. “When I left the hospital, they already had another 7 children with the same situation. I stayed with him in the hospital for 17 days so they could investigate what had caused it. Then they asked if I had #Zika and I didn’t even know what that was. I did some exams and it said I had had zika. Within my first two months of pregnancy I was all red, itchy and with a fever. Then in his exam it accused Zika. Now I will take care of him, which is what is important. He is 4 months old. I live with his father. We are just not living in our house. I live in my mother-in-law’s house. I need to be very responsible. It’s so many doctors. I have to always be observing everything. It’s lots of information to memorize. Sometimes I don’t even sleep. I come in the city hall bus, get here at 5am and stay until 1pm. But I also have appointments in other hospitals, so I get home at 7pm and in the next day at 2am I have to be at the bus stop again. To be outside in the middle of the night under dew with him is no good either. Until now, we don’t know exactly what will happen to him, but I do know he will depend on me for his whole life, that’s for sure. He will always have some difficulty for something, and it will be on me to help him. He will be under treatment so that he can better develop, but he will always have his limitations. He won’t be able to get by on his own. I have heard many mothers complaining of prejudice, but thank God this has never happened with me. Now I want to build my house, because I currently live with my mother-in-law and she lives in the countryside. I prefer to move to the city because it would be easier on me. I have stopped studying. I intended to get back, but with all his treatments I won’t have how, it would be very complicated, very intense.” © UNICEF/UN011574/Ueslei Marcelino
