Fred began free-diving at just 10 years-old. He’s broken four freediving world records. “The best place to take photos of sharks is from 0 to 20m down. In 2007, I was tracking Great Whites in South Africa. It took several hours to attract one. When it arrived, and I was face to face with them for the first time, for a split second I could hear the Jaws theme. Then, I realized the shark was just as curious about me as I was of him. He stayed with us for about 20 minutes before leaving. The most interesting thing about sharks is that you get to know them--some are lazy or skittish, while others are grumpy, or so curious they even bump into you or grab your camera. They’re all different, with unique personalities, and they all belong to communities with a pretty complex social order. Aquariums can help us study some of these behaviors as well as their biology.
