Whilst in our new Edinburgh store, you may notice the above illustration of the Scottish Botanist, Sir Robert Fortune who is best known for introducing tea plants from China to India in 1848. Fortune was commissioned by The East India Company to obtain the finest tea plants to establish plantations in India. After undergoing many harrowing adventures, Fortune disguised himself as a Chinese man and entered the forbidden tea growing regions of China unnoticed. He secured thousands of plants and seedlings to take to the Himalayas, thereby establishing the tea industry in India.
