#OnThisDay in 1983, Bernard ‘Bajdo‘ Vukas died, aged 55. “If I were born again, I would probably return as a Hajduk player”. These are the words of the winger which can be seen engraved upon his tombstone. With Hajduk, Vukas won the Yugoslav First League title on three occasions, and he was the league's top scorer. Renowned not only for his extraordinary skill and dribbling ability, his never-say-die approach won the respect of a nation and in 2000, he was voted Croatia’s greatest footballer by the national association. Vukas played 59 games for Yugoslavia, scoring 22 goals and winning two silver medals in the Olympic games. He was also a part of the Yugoslavian team in the 1950 and 1954 FIFA World Cups.
