Like many of you, I am disgusted by what happened in Mississippi today. For those of you who don't know, Governor Phil Bryant signed an appalling new law that blatantly discriminates against the LGBT community. Mississippi follows in the footsteps of other states (notably in the South), like North Carolina, where the Governor signed a law that eliminates existing municipal non-discrimination protections for LGBT people, prevents such provisions from being passed by cities in the future, and forces transgender students in public schools to use restrooms and other facilities inconsistent with their gender identity. Many people have said that the LGBT community should be happy and content with federal marriage equality, but these laws—like many others that have been introduced in over 30 states across the country since the historic ruling last June—are proof that we still have a long way to go. Cowardly politicians and religious leaders are trying to undo all of the hard work that has been done to advance human rights and it must be stopped. I know I am not alone when I say I am frustrated and tired of hearing about the passing of these kinds of laws. Sadly, many people don't even realize it's happening. More tragic still, many people have not seen the headlines like the ones in the image above. It's heartbreaking and sickening to witness how much hate still exists in this world. We have to continue to shed light on these incidents and to speak out against laws like the one in North Carolina and Mississippi. Please, do all you can to let your representatives know that you do not agree with this kind of hateful legislation. #HB1523
