#OnThisDay in 1959, Billy Wright became the first player in the world to make his 100th international appearance in England’s 1-0 victory over Scotland. The centre half, who spent his whole career at Wolverhampton Wanderers, won a total of 105 caps for England, captaining them a record 90 times, including during their campaigns at the 1950, 1954 and 1958 FIFA World Cup finals. Wright died on 3 September 1994, aged 70.
