10 years ago Tourgasm aired on HBO and I was more surprised than anyone else that it did. Tourgasm (ahh youthful ideas.. I almost called it Dane Train but I thought that was too safe and also I could not afford to travel by train) was suppose to be just a bunch of home videos that I might share for free on my website when websites mattered and social networking was a baby (except MySpace which was something special and a story for another post). I was gearing up to do my HBO special Vicious Circle (see the material was edgy and I was on a round stage.. gettttttt itttttttt??) and I was sitting with then HBO head honcho Chris Albrecht in his office and with me I had a backpack filled with rough footage I was gonna go edit later. He asked me how I was feeling preparing for VC and I told him I wanted Marty Callner to direct VC because he directed Carlin in the round and no one performed like that anymore and I was gonna bring it back. I also knew as a businessman offstage that if you perform in the round you can sell more tickets as you don't need to partition the arena. Chris said he wished he could figure out a way to pump up the special as HBO was concerned not enough people knew me and that by the way was so true but I was not gonna let that stop me. I told him I had this footage from a tour and it showed my career and home life as everything went to the next level. He asked me to put a DVD in the player and show him. I did and within a few minutes of watching he was laughing and said "let's air this leading up to Vicious Circle as a get to know you promo piece." I couldn't believe it. Wow. Okay. One problem. This wasn't a tv show and it really didn't have a lot of story outside of just what we filled and us fucking around and having a blast. I went into an edit bay and cut the show with my team and found more interesting tidbits than I could have imagined. I had brought Gary Gulman, Robert Kelly & Jay Davis on the road as openers and we had mostly a great time. I have a hundred stories of that time and I also have hundreds of hours of footage that will never see the light of day -- but the shows were something extraordinary and my career was starting. #tbt
