A female adult harp seal pops up through the ice to breathe and check on her pup in Canada’s Gulf of St. Lawrence. Typically, harp seal pups spend two weeks on solid ice after birth, before diving into the frigid waters. In the distance, the photographer’s boat and home for weeks at sea rests in the ice.
Sea ice in this region has been declining in recent years and having an impact on the ecosystems that harp seals and other arctic mammals rely on for survival.
