The works in Disguise: Masks and Global African Art are organized around the idea that masquerade is always an art of becoming. Yet, when African masks entered museum collections, they became artifacts. Disguise encourages us to remember that African masks were once part of contemporary performance art, responding to very specific needs and concerns.
