When Grace Silva received her diagnosis, anaplastic thyroid cancer, her doctors knew they had to hit it with everything they had. They removed her tumor and had her undergo a long stretch of radiation. Yet just 3 months after her final treatment, the notoriously aggressive cancer had already spread to her lungs. That was when Grace’s oncologist told her about an experimental trial for thyroid cancers that hadn’t responded to standard treatments. She agreed to enroll. Just 2 months later, the results were shocking: Grace’s largest mass had shrunk to half its previous size. Everywhere there were signs of retreat. Her oncologist said he had never seen such a rout. All 6 of the other anaplastic thyroid patients on the trial eventually died, but Grace’s tumors shrank until they barely registered. Most clinical trials for cancer drugs are failures.
