Photo and text by @beverlyjoubert. An exceptionally hot fire blazes around pyres of tusks from thousands of elephants, blackening them and slowly reducing them to ash. A Viking's funeral as @dereckjoubert calls it. This was the largest ivory burn in history and took place in Kenya. The country wishes to send a strong message to poachers that they view elephants worth more alive and they will be stepping up their anti-poaching efforts. They do not expect this to end poaching but they hope that the controversy and news surrounding the burn may have an effect on the demand. Many people wonder why the ivory is not sold and the money used for conservation. This ivory is largely the result of poaching and Kenya will not trade contraband. Also, sales in the past had the unexpected effect of increased poaching as the demand rose. Besides, money has a way of disappearing. Creating museums would ultimately cost a vast amount and need ongoing security. This burn hopes to tackle the ignorance surrounding the ivory trade. More people will know that elephants die for their ivory. People will learn that dozens of rangers are killed each year by poachers. Perhaps people might come to agree that elephants are worth more alive, and once the ignorance is gone, the demand might begin to disappear as well and that will make all the difference. #WorthMoreAlive #saynotoivory #kenyaivoryburn
