The Sub2 Project is an attempt at the extraordinary — to break the 2-hour barrier in marathon running. A 1:59:59 marathon would require 85 to 90% of a runner’s maximum aerobic capacity — twice the capacity of an average person — and a sustained heart rate of about 160 to 170 beats per minute. (The typical resting rate is 60 to 100 beats per minute.) “What excites me is understanding the limits of human performance,” said Yannis Pitsiladis, the man behind the plan, a leading antidoping expert with the International Olympic Committee and a professor at the University of Brighton in England. “What can man do?” @urielsinai took this photo of the 3-time Olympic track champion @kenenisabekele, whom Yannis enlisted for the Sub2 Project, training in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
