The Gola's #Gbetu masquerade is owned and performed by men but considered to be feminine. Performed primarily for secular entertainment, gbetu “gives birth” to small dancing figures that emerge from beneath her raffia skirt, perform, and then return to her folds. The head-to-toe raffia covering allows performers to become a new body entirely, and emphasizes the centrality of the body in African masquerade. #disguisebkm
