"The Backbone Gone" those opening words to 1976's #WhodSheCoo were the only 3 words we heard from one of the most UNSUNG bass players of the modern funk era. We love Larry & Stanley & Louis & Michael H. & Nathan & Verdine & Bootsy & Jaco---but man....we can NOT ignore Marshall Jones. In a move that is surprising none, 2016 is just taking all of our greats like it's NATHAN. All the departures cut deep but this one cuts personal for me. #MarshallJones the turban terror of THE most soulful basslines ever in music has passed away at the age of 75. Next to #Motown's #JamesJamerson Jones is my 2nd fav bassist of the soul era. Jones' group the #OhioPlayers had 2 phases: the #Westbound Era (Detroit label they recorded 5 records for tween 71-73) & the #MercuryRecords Era (74-81). Even though the monster platinum hits were the latter era, hip hop's initial new renaissance era's (1992-1997) diet came from the Westbound Catalogue. For starters the shrill synth ideas of GFunk were based on their #FunkyWorm from the #Pain album. NOT to mention #PeteRock's entire bassline arsenal was pretty much Jones. Besides Khalis Bayyan's (nee Ronald Bell) sax solo on #KoolAndTheGang's #NT I can't think of another musician in the classic hip hop era whose EVERY FOUR BARS winds up being the foundation of another classic song. Real heads feel me on this "Pain" alone is like 7 songs---I mean without telling #PinoPallidino (a Jamerson worshipper) we groomed him into a Marshall Jones ("Player Player" "Chicken Grease" "Another Life"--and about Fiftyleven outakes were Jones inspired (we were in contact for a good portion of 98 but nothing transpired because all the music for #Voodoo was complete) I have a deep love for the sound of the subtle jazzed two finger approach to bass playing as opposed to the HEY LOOK AT ME RIGHT CHEA!!!!!! method of slap thumb playing. It takes a mighty musician to quietly command attention. Marshall Jones was Mighty Mighty. Rest in Peace man.
