Boys climbed a tree in the Xingu River in the Amazon rain forest near Altamira, Brazil. A third of the city has been permanently flooded by the Belo Monte dam, which will soon be the 3rd-largest hydroelectric complex in the world, in terms of output. When the photographer @avelkaim first reached the Xingu River basin, he found a lush and humid green expanse. The region is one of the world’s most biologically and ethnically diverse areas, home to about 25,000 indigenous people, many of whom have a close relationship to the land. But their way of life is under threat. When the dam is completed, it will fuel further industrialization of the Amazon basin. “We have to protect the people whose entire way of life, identity and culture are dependent upon these ecosystems,” said @avelkaim, a @borealcollective photographer. “If we protect their way of life, they will protect the environment around them.” @avelkaim’s photos from #Brazil will be exhibited at the @look3festival in Charlottesville, Virginia. #lensblog
