Tonight, two of our staff members visited the @The White House to install one of our Armed Forces History objects for a temporary display. Here's the story of this flag:
Monica Helms served in the US Navy as a submariner for eight years until 1978. Helms transitioned to a woman in 1997.

After becoming involved in transgender activism, Helms designed and created the first transgender pride flag in August 1999. She debuted it at The Phoenix Pride Parade in 2000.
The outer stripes of the flag represent the traditional pink and blue colors associated with baby boys and girls. The white stripe at the center represents those who are intersex, transitioning, are undefined gender, and for those who do not fit in the traditional gender binary. According to Helms, no matter which way you fly it, the color meanings are preserved.
June is LGBTQ Pride Month.
