Michael Manser (1929-2016)

Pioneering British Modernist and former RIBA President Michael Manser died this week, aged 87.

From the 1960s Manser developed a distinctive, and remarkably consistent, architectural style, drawing influence from the key players in European Modernism, in particular Mies van der Rohe. Manser was also continuously influenced by his Modernist contemporaries, including Peter Wormersley and Gerald Beech, many of whom he knew personally through his journalistic work in the ’50s and ’60s. In 1983 Michael was elected President of the RIBA, and he was a staunch advocate of modernism during his two-year stint.
