Pat Jennings kept goal for Northern Ireland 119 times between 1964 and 1986, becoming the then-oldest player at a FIFA World Cup in his final game against Brazil at Mexico 86, aged 41, #OnThisDay.
Jennings has the rare distinction of winning The FA Cup with both North London rivals, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.
In total, Jennings made over 1,000 top level appearances, and despite being a goalkeeper, he scored in the 1967 FA Charity Shield, sending a large punt down the field that bounced over Manchester United goalkeeper Alex Stepney and into the net.
Jennings’ record as the World Cup’s oldest player was eventually surpassed by Cameroon’s Roger Milla at USA 1994 and then later by Colombia goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon at Brazil 2014, who both had international careers that surpassed the 20-year mark.
