I decided to paint the portraits of some of the many people who inspire me on the London gay scene in 2016. You could say it’s a ‘gender fluid – fluid’ interpretation. I was thinking about the Stonewall riots back in 1969 and the inspiring part iconic drag queen Marsha P. Johnson played in speaking out about gay liberation as an activist creating various movements integral to changing attitudes and acceptance towards the transgender and drag community.
My heroes are my friends, people who through their being confront and question society through their work on various levels. I pay homage to our community who express themselves through mediums of performance and image. Those who illuminate our counterculture with an air of flamboyance which underlies serious political statements of acceptance and the right to live and be who we truly are.
I was thrilled to be asked to be part of this charity project, to me Pride is a statement of celebration… it's also a time to reflect on the continuing struggle of the gay community the world over where acceptance isn't part of society. We should all be free to be able to be and express ourselves regardless of sexuality, gender or race without discrimination..."
