Revisited this place with my kids today for the first time in many years - the public landing at the Poquoson River, York County, Virginia, which, after 5-6 miles of winding east past bouys toward that blue sky, feeds into the lower Chesapeake Bay. For many years - beyond my earliest remembrances - until his 70’s, my grandfather, a waterman, would tie his boat in the area where that far left stake rests now. Every morning before dawn, he’d head out from here through the
salt mist to harvest oysters or blue crab. His last boat was a 36-footer, the Miss Katherine. On Summer Saturdays, he’d fill her with family & friends for all-day fishing parties - those were some of the highest days of my yout. Could barely sleep the night before. We’d arrive here
as the sun rose, load up and head east...watery heavan. I see it and him now.
