#OnThisDay in 1974, East and West Germany met in the first round of the FIFA World Cup. Jürgen Sparwasser's 77th-minute strike meant the East Germans advanced as group winners, above Helmut Schön's hosts. Yet the defeat did the reigning European champions a favour for they avoided facing the Netherlands, Argentina and Brazil in the second stage. Instead they won their second round group over Yugoslavia, Sweden, and Poland, then proceeded to win the Final over the Netherlands.
