Close-up view of a Great White Shark in the waters off of South Australia. The largest predatory fish on Earth, the great white can grow to lengths of perhaps 20-feet and weigh well over a ton. Despite being such a large predator, much of its life cycle remains a mystery and researchers are only beginning to understand pieces of the lives of these animals. The shark in this picture has a damaged dorsal fin, but this didn’t seem to slow the shark down.
I photographed my first shark in 1982 and have never lost the sense of wonder I get when seeing these animals underwater. As a photographer, sharks are an ideal subject, representing the perfect blend of grace and power. But a big part of why I photograph them and produce stories about them is to help change perceptions that exist about sharks being monsters. I have come to learn that sharks are complex animals, possessing amazing biology. As predators they play a vital role in keeping the ocean and our planet healthy. The July issue of @ナショナルジオグラフィック has a story about Great White Sharks where you can learn more.
