One is an artist raising her daughter in Toronto. The other is a nurse with 4 children, who spent years shielding her kids from war. @damonwinter photographed Susan Stewart, left, with Eman Mohammad, a Syrian refugee. As much of the world reacts to the #refugee crisis with hesitation or hostility, there is one country where the government cannot keep up with its citizens’ demand to welcome them. In #Canada, groups of ordinary citizens can offer refugees financial and practical support. When the Mohammads arrived in Toronto in February, Susan and her partners had already raised more than 40,000 Canadian dollars (about $30,700), selected an apartment, talked to the local school and found a nearby mosque. After 3 years of barely hanging on in Jordan, Eman and her husband, Abdullah, weren’t used to being wanted or welcomed. “What do these people want in return?” Abdullah asked himself. On #CanadaDay, visit the link in our profile to read about one place where refugees encounter a foreign world: welcome. #??
