Much of Kiribati — a collection of 33 coral atolls and reef islands scattered across a swath of the Pacific Ocean about twice the size of Alaska — lies no higher than 6 feet above sea level. For years, scientists have been predicting that much of the island nation may become uninhabitable as a result of environmental problems linked to #climatechange. And for just as long, citizens have paid little heed. But when a @worldbank study laid out the country’s future in apocalyptic detail, Kiribati began drawing up what are essentially plans for its demise. The government has been promoting “migration with dignity,” urging residents with employable skills to begin moving abroad. It also bought nearly 6,000 acres in Fiji, an island nation more than 1,000 miles away, as a potential refuge. But packing up an entire country isn’t easy, and may not be possible. The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer @joshhaner took this @nytvideo while on #nytassignment in #Kiribati. Visit the link in our profile to learn more.
