photo by @chien_chi_chang/@Magnum Photos. It was mid May 2016 in the former Burmese capital of Yangon. The air was hot and humid. One heavy gray cloud obscured the sun, and others sailed behind. Above each monolithic cloud, it seemed, there was a gigantic bucket of water at tipping point. In an instant, the bucket overflowed over downtown Yangon. The pedestrians all reacted reflexively—finding refuge under colorful umbrellas, sheltering their wares, walking carefully around potholes of water in their sandals. While the rain continued to pour, the sun seeped through the clouds. A distant Buddhist chant provided a baseline to the cacophony of walkers and commuters. Then it was all over, business as usual, just another day during the rainy season.
