For 4 years, China has been blocking fishermen in the #SouthChinaSea from a reef near the Philippines. The reef, Scarborough Shoal, has become a frontline in the struggle between China, the Philippines and the U.S. over military control of the sea. Today, an international tribunal in The Hague ruled that China’s claims are illegal. But the tribunal has no power to enforce its decision. @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reporter @javier.c.hernandez and photographer @sergeyponomarev set out to visit the shoal in late June. Their 20-hour journey was mostly uneventful. But when they were about a mile from the shoal, things changed. “I remember looking behind the ship and seeing this Chinese speedboat coming directly at us,” recalled @javier.c.hernandez.
