THE UPRIGHT ROW
Ahhh, yes a personal favorite for years! Controversial in some circles, yet essential in others. We can begin to think of the upright row as a movement that brings a strong powerful look to your shoulders and upper back. Concerns come from the increased chance for injury, but there are three ways to fix this. The first, visualizing the movement, knowing the exact muscles you need to use and know the end point of motion for the move. Second, use weights that are lighter for you to increase feeling the right muscles and not having to bring the bar too high and out of the right range. Lastly, bringing your arms out wider. This is something I personally believe in and allows for more lateral deltoid involvement and decreased injury risk. The angle of your arm does not allow you to bring the bar very far into that risk zone. It also allows you to hit the traps more than closed grip. I may not be able to take on the masses but if you're interested in trying new methods to build your physique then lets give this a try.
