Gassho Zukuri, thatched roof cottages in Shirakawa-go Village, a world heritage site. The roofs are made to resemble hands in prayer - their steep pitch also lessens the pressure of deep snow that buries the village in winter. And they always are built on an east/west axis to get maximum sunlight for warmth. The thatch is replaced every 30 years, villagers will all pitch in to raise the roof.
