#PropertyReceiving From the collection of #DavidBowie, “Witness” by the Cornish artist #PeterLanyon arrives in London ahead of next week’s exhibition opening.
Painted in a converted sail-loft in 1961 in #StIves, the small fishing town on the western-most tip of England, the work was created just two years after the artist had first taken to the skies in a glider. This new activity allowed Lanyon to see the Cornish landscape from a radically different perspective and to bring bigger, more elemental forces into his painting, becoming “like the mountaineer who cannot see the clouds without feeling the lift inside them.” Witness is Lanyon’s preferred vertical format, standing at six feet tall, the height of a man.
This is one of three works by Lanyon that David Bowie loaned to the artist’s retrospective at Tate St Ives in 2010. Our London preview exhibition of the personal collection of David Bowie runs 20 July – 9 August. #BowieCollector #Bowie
