The Queen's Swan Marker health-checks a swan during his five-day journey upriver to record and conserve the Thames swan population.
Swan Upping dates back to the twelfth century, and has developed into a colourful ceremony dedicated to conservation and education. Often watched by local school children, the watermen round up new cygnets in their boats to check, weigh and identify them. They are helped by The Queen's Swan Warden, who is a Professor of Ornithology at Oxford University, and at the end of the week a report will be produced containing all the information about this year's swan population.

Last year's cygnet count was relatively low, and so this year the Swan Marker, David Barber, is hoping for an increase in numbers. Let's wish them luck!
