This is the story of Bretton - who I met at @seattlechildrens last week. Bretton is a 15 year old hockey player from #Washington who is bravely battling cancer. The shit sandwich of it all is that cancer claims Bretton's foot this week - which as you might imagine is devastating to a skater. Well, devastating to any skater but Bretton - because Bretton's staying in the game: his Dad reached out to @Reebok and they're making Bretton an ice skate prosthetic so he can climb over the boards again once he's out of the hospital. I gave Bretton a "game-worn" jersey from my collection (and he gave me an excellent #puckcancer shirt) but I felt like Bretton deserved a little better than a sweater some fat loser lived in. So I told Bretton that in the #Mallrats series we're working on, the little boy who was caught in the escalator (in the movie) is a character that comes back, and the now 25 year old is missing a foot from that fateful day (Trivia: the off-camera line "Somebody get a medic! There's a little boy caught in the escalator!!!" was delivered by #JimJacks - the late, great producer of 'Rats, #RaisingArizona and #dazedandconfused - the man for whom this #mallrats2 crusade began). Since Bretton is a fan of the flick, I asked him if I could name my one-footed escalator victim Bretton in his honor. Bretton and his Dad LOVED that - just about as much as I loved the boy's commitment to his lifelong goal of still playing in the @NHL when he grows up. When life hands you lemons, you make lemonade, but when life hands you cancer?
