An Oceanic Whitetip Shark cruises through the blue waters of The Bahamas with 3 Pilotfish as an escort. Oceanic Whitetips have evolved to be efficient predators in pelagic waters (open ocean), designed like an aircraft with long pectoral fins that allow them to glide for long distances. Splashes of white can be seen on the tip of their dorsal and pectoral fins, an evolutionary adaptation that mimics small fish in the open sea and attracts larger fish the shark might prey upon.

The Oceanic Whitetip was once the most abundant large animal on Earth (large being defined as weighing more than 100 pounds), but today they are on the brink of extinction due to a demand for their fins, which are used in shark fin soup.
Learn more about this magnificent animal in the August issue of National Geographic Magazine (@ナショナルジオグラフィック). To see more shark photos and to read about the stories behind the photos, follow @BrianSkerry on Instagram.
