due to the country’s political situation. She was a runner who had won her country many medals, but at that time some considered that a woman’s place was not on the track. She received several death threats. But none of them could shatter her spirit. Despite
the circumstances, she competed at the Olympic Games Barcelona 1992 under heavy security and won her country its first ever Olympic gold. Her fist thrust into the air became a symbol of freedom and self-expression, of victory and defiance.
